The Right to Fair Compensation and Transparency in Land Acquisition, Rehabilitation and Resettlement (Amendment) Bill 2015 was passed by the Lok Sabha on March 10, 2015. Land Acquisition in India is a process by which the centre or state government acquires private land for industrialization, development or urbanization while providing compensation to the affected landowners. The Bill empowered the government to take over lands without the consent of the farmers and convert vast tracts of cultivable land to build corporate companies. Hence farmers and activists took to the roads in large numbers as their sign of protest in 2015. |
